According to a Cincinnati Enquirer analysis Hamilton County's inmate population is growing at a steady pace, and with the county's Queensgate jail closed some residents worry about a crime wave.
County officials decided to shut down the facility because of budget cuts. That means limited jail space and possibly more criminals out on the streets.
That scenario worries many local residents. We talked with one man who lives in Mariemont who said he will make fewer trips into downtown, he's concerned about being robbed.
A former Queensgate inmate is glad the jail is closed. He said people should not be concerned about an increase in crime. He said most Queensgate inmates are not violent.
County officials said if voters had approved a recent sales tax increase then that would have paid for more permanent jail space.
