Former congressman Dennis Eckart and Ohio Roundtable Vice President Rob Walgate debated casino's before a packed hall at Kent State Monday.
For students, the gambling issue isn't new.
"On this campus, you have online gambling that's huge. Gambling, poker itself. There's a lot of gambling going on Ohio campuses that may not be the most legal thing in the world but it's going on," said Kent State student Randy Ziemnik.
Student panelists asked tough questions on gambling.
"Is there any doubt in your mind that Dan Gilbert will even be allowed to own a casino in Ohio?" ask Ohio University student Ian Bowman-Henderson.
"Well, Ian, there's no doubt in the minds of the security exchange commission," responded Eckart.
Eckart defended Cleveland Cavs owner Dan Gilbert who's been hounded by reports this past week that he was arrested for illegal bookmaking when he was 19 years old. Gilbert had committed to two debates this past week, but missed both.
"He's been the face of Issue 3 from the very beginning. He's slated to own two of these casinos. Yet as it comes down to a critical vote on an issue that has not gone his way in the past, he's nowhere to be seen," said Walgate.
Another Kent State journalism major said Gilbert's claim of illness at the last minute amounts to ducking questions.
"I'm going to try to get a hold of him and see what can be done there. And see if he'll talk about the issues or may he just has the flu who knows?" said Teresa Edwards.
The college audience also contemplated social concerns of casinos versus jobs.
Kent State students said they were proud to have hosted the final Issue 3 debate before voters head to the polls.
