Cuyahoga County could be the first county in Ohio to use bilingual ballots in November.
The Cuyahoga County Board of Elections said on Wednesday that they were told to change the ballot or face a possible lawsuit by the justice department, ONN's Cristin Severance reported.
"I think this may stem more from a national policy being implemented by the justice department," said Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner.
Brunner's office oversees all of Ohio elections.
"This board of elections has done a very good job of reaching out to all the voters in the county among very diverse populations," Brunner said.
Translators are at 25 polling places in Cuyahoga County. Information on deadlines and locations has been sent to Spanish speaking voters since 2006.
"The department of justice has obviously been keeping tabs on the population, which we only measure every 10 years with the census," Brunner said.
Brunner wants the board of elections to consider the changes, but hopes that the DOJ understands the amount of money and time it could take to print new ballots.
County officials will meet with the justice department on Aug. 23 to discuss the ballot issue again.
