The Illinois Department of Insurance is warning consumers about a company allegedly selling fraudulent health insurance to consumers.

The department announced Thursday that ReAssurance Health has sold numerous policies without authorization in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Wisconsin.

Health insurance companies must be licensed in Illinois and have policies approved by the insurance department before selling coverage to consumers. The department says neither ReAssurance nor its policies have been approved in Illinois.

The insurance department has experts available to help consumers who purchased coverage through ReAssurance. Consumers can call the department toll free at 877-527-9431.

A phone message left for Donald Chew, president and CEO of ReAssurance, was not immediately returned.
