New statistics from a drug prevention survey indicate that just over 21 percent of Ohio's high school seniors said that they have used a prescription drug outside of medical supervision.
Beth Wilson of DrugFree.org and Stacey Gohnapfel-Hasson of the Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services discussed the findings with ONN's Arica Robbins.
They said that nationally, treatment admissions for prescription drug abuse have skyrocketed 430 percent in 10 years. Since 2007, more Ohioans have died from drug overdoses than in motor vehicle crashes, according to their findings.
The 2011 Monitoring The Future Survey asked teens about their drug use. Some of the findings included:
- Marijuana use among teens rose in 2011 for the fourth straight year
- 1 in every 9 high school seniors reported using "synthetic marijuana" in the past 12 months
