Historical relics surround students in Darren Plessinger's American Government class at Pickaway Ross Career and Technology Center.

In the midst of the nation's forefathers and past flags, the teenagers are riding the wave of the future, ONN's Harrison Hove reported.

The class is getting high tech while going green and saving on paper and books.

"We won't touch a pen, pencil, paper, or a textbook this entire semester. The iPad's will be used for all the materials during this entire class," said Plessinger.

Every day the students grab their iPad at the start of class and get to work.

"I didn't like the paper thing," said student Joseph McKibben. "It's too much stuff to carry around and too much stuff to get lost."

McKibben wants a career working with automobiles. When he leaves his lab he heads for a traditional classroom where he wishes more teachers would adopt this emphasis on technology.

"Our entire society is moving that way," Plessinger said. "These kids engage with social media on a daily basis. I don't think my class is relevant unless we move in this direction."

Plessinger is using the 26 iPad's in his class as part of a pilot program for the Pickaway Ross Career and Technology Center.  The $25,000 tab was paid for by Horizon Chillicothe Telephone and another federal grant, Hove reported.

The money is well spent in the eyes of McKibben who said that the students are learning valuable skills for the future.

"By the end of the class, they could go out to a store and show one of the guys there how to use them," Plessinger said.

Administration at the school says the switch to iPads could actually save the class money since the average paper textbook only lasts four to five years.
