Ohio-based GE Aviation is planning to open three new plants, including one in Dayton. It's part of a $580 million dollar expansion.
"We've added over 100 people in our operations in Dayton, between Vandalia and Beavercreek. We're also breaking ground on a research center at the University of Dayton now that will add 100 to 200 jobs next five years," said Rick Kennedy, GE spokesman.
Kennedy said the company has not laid off anyone in Cincinnati even though GE lost the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter alternate engine program.
"In the past year, we've absorbed 800 jobs on the Strike Fighter Program. It's amazing to lose the program and not lose one job," he said.
GE announced Monday that it also plans to hire 5,000 veterans around the country. Officials aren't sure how many will be hired in Ohio, but Richard Whitaker (who was in the army between 1980-84) is interested in a career with GE.
Another job seeker, Vincent Harris, moved from Columbus to Cincinnati for a job but his company laid him off a month ago.
"It's frustrating, disheartening some days," said Harris.
GE officials told ONN's Lot Tan that hiring will begin immediately. Kennedy said GE Aviation employs some 7,500 in the Cincinnati area.
