A southeast Ohio police chief was arrested Wednesday night on a felony drug charge.

Buchtel Police Chief Kelsie Lanning Jr. was detained by Athens County Sheriff's Deputies for an investigation relating to alleged drug abuse.

Athens County Sheriff Pat Kelly said that Lanning, 33, was taken into custody at his home in Nelsonville Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Athens County Sheriff, Lanning permitted his live-in girlfriend, Jessica Willison, 29, to buy Oxycodone pills from an undercover officer at his residence with him present.

Lanning was not on duty at the time of the alleged buy.

Deputies had a search warrant ready and once the buy took place, searched the home and found marijuana, crushed up pills and snort tubes, according to Kelly.

Late Wednesday night, prosecutors charged Lanning with fifth-degree permitting drug abuse.

He was arraigned in Athens Municipal Court Thursday morning and his bond was set at $50,000.

Willison has been charged with third-degree aggravated possession of drugs and fifth-degree trafficking in drugs.
