The U.S. Postal Service has decided to keep open three northeastern Ohio post offices that had been considered for closure.

A spokesman told the Akron Beacon Journal that closing the three Akron-area sites would not have been cost-effective. Several other post offices and processing centers in the area are still being reviewed for possible mergers or closures.

Akron Councilman Jeff Fusco said area residents had called and written to the postal service to oppose the potential closings.

The financially struggling agency wants to close thousands of post offices and processing sites across the country. The list of facilities being considered included scores of Ohio post offices, along with a dozen processing centers throughout the state.

The postal service has agreed not to move ahead with the closings before mid-May.
