Charlene Greene has a spirted laugh that you can hear while she shows people around the St. Stephen's Community Center.
"We are a multi-faceted resource for people in our community. We've even started now, housing the overflow from the women's shelter," said Greene.
Greene obviously was an exceptional volunteer because in October of 2010 they offered her a paid position, reported ONN's Arica Robbins.
"When I retired, I came here and volunteered three days a week and people thought I worked here and then a volunteer coordinator had some family things that she needed to take care of and (lose a space here) so they asked if I would take over the task," explained Greene.
She graduated from the University of Dayton and found her first teaching job in nearby Trotwood. Seven years later she moved (to) central Ohio. Her first attempt at retirement came after 22 (lose a space here) years at Gahanna Lincoln High School.
"I applied to Columbus City Schools and got a job teaching in Columbus and taught at Eastmoor Academy High School for seven additional years And then finally I thought 'Ok, after 38 years. It's time,'" she said.
Even upon college graduation, Greene found it tough to 'retire' from her sorority. She's now the President of the Columbus Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta.
"It really is critical for young women. I think to see other women who are there to help them and not to put them down and so that's why I think the sorority has been very important to me," she added.
Whether working with volunteers, or with the young women in her sorority, it's easy to get a sense of Greene.
"Just that whole idea of interacting with other women, getting to really see that women can play a role, and my thing is always making this world a better place."
