Eric Elwell

Chief Meteorologist

Eric Elwell serves as ONN's chief meteorologist.

In addition to leading the ONN weather team to three consecutive Ohio Associated Press awards for "Best Weather Operation," Elwell took First Place in the category of "Best Regularly Scheduled Weathercast" in 2002.

Eric joined ONN in 1998 and was influential in creating ONN's "Ohio Weather on the 10s," the state's most sophisticated and technologically-advanced forecasting system.

Elwell began his career at WTVA-TV, the NBC affiliate in Tupelo, Miss., and then worked for KAKE-TV, the ABC affiliate in Wichita, Kan.

He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Geoscience with a specialization in Broadcast Meteorology from Mississippi State University. Eric has earned the American Meteorological Society's Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) designation

The AMS grants the CBM designation to broadcast meteorologists who meet established criteria for scientific competence and effective communication skills in their weather presentations.  Eric also holds the Seal Of Approval from the National Weather Association.

Elwell's hobbies include landscaping, sports, and, of course, storm chasing. Eric started chasing storms in his teens. However, his real adventures began while working in Kansas for several years before joining ONN, covering storms in Tornado Alley.

Eric has seen several tornadoes up close and personal, including one F-4. Eric is also a licensed amateur (Ham) radio operator and can sometimes be heard under the call sign "KD4BNT."
