Green Ohio: River Stewards

"I grew up in a very agricultural community and my dad works with conservation services," said UD Sophomore Eric Schroeder. "So I've always been interested in conservation and environmental issues."
Now Schroeder is putting those interests to good use.
He is part of UD's River Stewards program.
The River Stewards take care of kayaks and enjoy Dayton's rivers, as well as educating the community.
"Everything has a primary or secondary source having to do with water," said UD Sophomore Grace John. "The river here is vital to the community."
That thought is the basis for the River Stewards outreach.
No matter the season, even when a blanket of snow sits on the river's edge, this group has one thing in mind.
"My primary goal is to educate people," said John.
The River Stewards use events like River Day and school presentations to educate students and adults alike.
The River Stewards created a yearly conference called the River Summit, gathering area leaders to discuss problems affecting all communities in the Miami River watershed.
"They get together to talk about many different issues that are going on with the river because they've figured out it can't be done on a town to town basis anymore," said Schroeder. "Everyone needs to get together to get issues accomplished."
