Roller Coaster Accident Injures 27Jul 10 2006 5:41PM
At least 27 people are recovering after the Son of Beast ride at King's Island came to an abrupt stop on Sunday. The roller coaster that been shut down indefinitely. The State Department of Agriculture and OSHA inspectors are at King's Island, trying to figure out exactly what went wrong when 27 passengers got off the ride yesterday afternoon complaining of chest and neck pain. It's the world's Tallest and Fasted Wooden Roller Coaster. Son of Beast has given six million safe rides to roller coaster lovers since opening in 2000. On Sunday afternoon, 27 riders found themselves going to the hospital rather than on other rides. The preliminary report from the State Department of Agriculture suggests the coaster had a structural problem. "It was obvious that here was a failure of a timber, and maybe more than one timber, causing a depression in the track where it would make a bump and if you hit that bump going very fast that would cause quite a jolt." The last time the State Department of Agriculture investigated any type of accident at King's Island was three years ago. The department says it's their job to do so, any time someone has an overnight stay at the hospital. King's Island says they're going over every inch of Son of Beast to make sure its passengers will never experience the problem again. "Safety is our number one concern at Paramount Kings Island we take that extremely seriously. [Our guests] are here to have absolutely great safe fun and memorable time and that's what we are here to provide," a park representative said. There is no word yet on how long it will be before Son of Beast will up and running, but the rest of the park is open. As for the 27 people sent to the hospital, 25 of them were treated and released. |
