Sibling Police Officers Save Boy From Frozen Pond

Reported by Kurt Ludlow

A young boy was pulled from some frigid waters in a rescue where every second counted. The heroes are two Columbus Police officers, and on Tuesday, they spoke to 10TV.

That unidentified boy spent the night at Children's Hospital. He was saved by two police officers who risked their own lives when the frightening call for help came over their radio.

The rookie officer and the veteran knew there was no time to waste. They got there in minutes and realized this would be no ordinary rescue.

"He had to be 30 feet out in the middle and the entire lake was frozen over. The ice was about an inch and a half thick," says William Edwards.

The veteran led the way and the rookie was right behind him.

Emmanuel Edwards says, "We started to take our gun belts off and we dropped them and we immediately went in. And we got about waist deep and we started breaking the ice then."

William Edwards says, "We were punching and when we couldn't break it with our fists, we were using our elbows to break it because the further out we got the less leverage we had to actually break the ice."

The water was up to their necks, their hands were bloodied from the ice and the boy was just out of reach.

"And that's when I was like, 'I'm in trouble.' And I just reached back and that's where my brother was and he grabbed my hand and I was able to stretch out a little farther and I was able to reach the kid," says William Edwards.

He was saved by the veteran and the rookie, the brothers behind the badge and the brothers for life. They are William and Emmanuel Edwards.

"There really wasn't a word said between us and we were both in the water. It just happened automatically. I don't think we said anything to each other the whole time; it just happened," says William Edwards.

The brothers say it's the most important call they've ever had, with each other or without.

"To save a child's life, you couldn't ask to do more. That's all you sign up for, right there," says Emmanuel Edwards.
