Akron Children's Hospital is notifying about 230,000 patients that someone hacked into its computer system and gained access to sensitive information, including Social Security numbers and bank account records. The computer breach happened over Labor Day weekend, but the hospital didn't alert the FBI until last week. It didn't start notifying patients until this week. A hospital spokesman says officials don't know if anyone has been affected. The founder of the nonprofit Identity Theft Resource Center says the hospital's slow response was unacceptable. The hospital says its security consultants initially didn't think there was a major problem. Copyright 2006 by The Associated Press. |
